National seminar on life and works of Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya held

LAKHIMPUR: A national-level seminar on ‘The life and works of Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya’ was held on the concluding day of the 6th North Lakhimpur College Book Fair in connection with the birth centenary of the first and foremost Jnanpith winner of the State. The seminar was jointly organized by the Department of Bangla, St. Paul’s Cathedral Mission College, Kolkata and the Department of Assamese, North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous).

The inaugural session of the seminar was chaired by Principal Dr Biman Chandra Chetia. The objectives of organizing the seminar along with its significance were explained by Dr Arabinda Rajkhowa, Head of the Department of Assamese, North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) and Dr Sheikh Moquebul Islam, Head of the Department of Bangla, St. Paul’s Cathedral Mission College.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr Pallabi Deka Bujarbaruah, Professor of Assamese at Dibrugarh University. Basudev Das of Kolkata graced the occasion as guest of honour. A total of 200 researchers and participants simultaneously presented the research papers in the technical session of the seminar, which was held in seven stages.

The book fair concluded with a colourful cultural programme titled ‘Aitijya’ (The Heritage), organized on Monday night by the Department of Assamese of the college and the distribution of prizes among the winners of the competitions held during the course of the 8-day-long book fair. The organizers informed that an average 2,000 book lovers visited the book fair every day, and books worth around Rs 10 lakh were sold in the book fair.
