National seminar on spirituality concludes at Gargaon College

SIVASAGAR: A one-day national seminar on ‘Spirituality: Theoretical and Applied Significance’ was organized by Sati Radhika Mahila Tirtha, the sister wing of Asom Satra Mahasabha and Department of Assamese, in association with IQAC Gargaon College on October 7.

The seminar was inaugurated by eminent academician and Principal of Gargaon College, Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta. In his inaugural address, Dr Mahanta expatiated on the significance of spirituality. He opined that moral and spiritual education had immense significance in the direction of establishing a healthy, resilient and ethically upright society. The welcome address was delivered by Dr Arundhati Mahanta, president of Sati Radhika Mahila Tirtha.

Dr Mahanta welcomed everyone on behalf of Sati Radhika Mahila Tirtha and the organizing committee of the national seminar. The ceremonial lamp was lit by the working president of Asom Satra Mahasabha, Bhabananda Deva Goswami. Distinguished academician, erudite scholar in the area of cultural history of Assam and Northeast India and former Professor and Head of the Department of Cultural Studies, Tezpur University, Dr Pradip Jyoti Mahanta delivered the keynote address. In a stimulating deliberation, Dr Mahanta dwelt on the subject of spirituality and spoke at length about the differences of western and Indian notions of spirituality. He defined spirituality as a quest for life through knowledge or worship of beauty. Describing spirituality as a vast realm, he explained how the concept of western spirituality is focused on its theoretical aspect while Indian spirituality is centered on attempts to enhance and beautify life.

A book titled Yajnaseni Krishna authored by Bhisma Durlov Mahanta, retired Principal of Motiram Bora HS Balika Vidyapith, Nagaon was also released on the occasion. Dr Rina Handique, Vice Principal of Gargaon College, the faculty members of the college, the office bearers and members of Sati Radhika Mahila Tirtha and a significant number of guests and students were present at the inaugural programme. Following the inaugural session, a significant number of participants, including researchers, faculty members and students presented their papers in two technical sessions. Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, Principal, Gargaon College, Dr Dhrubajyoti Nath, Principal of Swahid Peoli Phukan College, Dr Archana Devi, Associate Professor in Assamese, Sibsagar College and Dr Arundhati Mahanta, retired Head of the department of Assamese, Gargaon College acted as the resource persons in the seminar.

Pranob Dowerah, head of the department of Assamese, Gargaon College, along with the convenors of the national seminar, namely Devajani Bakolial and Dr Ankur Dutta thanked all concerned for the successful completion of the event.
