SIVASAGAR: The women study cell of Sibsagar Commerce College, in collaboration with Library and Information Science Professionals Association of Assam (LISPA), organized a national web symposium on 'Role of Women in Socio-Economic Transformation' recently.

Inaugurating the symposium, Dr Junu Mahanta, retired Associate Professor and Head of the Department of English of DDR College, writer and president of Sadou Asom Lekhika Samaroh Samity, Dibrugarh, said that change was only the constant thing in the world. She referred to the contribution of women pioneers of the Indian renaissance in the uplift of women. According to her, sufficient representation of women in all fields was a must to bring about a significant socio-economic change.

Dr Saumarjyoti Mahanta, Principal of Sibsagar Commerce College, said that around the world there were countless examples of women's contribution towards socio-economic transformation. He highlighted the declaration made by Simone De Beauvoir in his book Second Sex that 'man is defined as a human being and woman as a female. When she behaves as human being, she is said to imitate the male'.

While Dr Gogoi spoke on role of women in changing the course of our existing culture and economy from historical perspective, Barsha Rani Bishoya said that women should change their thought process, mind set and should be self-employed for their development. She also said that both men and women should work hand in hand for the development of women.
