New Delhi: In a press release, the National Commission for Women (NSW) has announced that it has taken suo moto cognisance of a woman who was subjected to the 'two-finger test', a medical procedure that has been banned by the Supreme Court.

This has come as a consequence of a media report which had been making rounds. The media report stated that the doctors of the Indian Air Force performed the 'two-finger test' on a woman Air Force officer who had previously alleged rape against a Lieutenant and in this manner caused the woman officer to 'relive the trauma'. The Lieutenant has been arrested by the police after a complaint was lodged.

The National Commission of Women expressed their disappointment over the incident and asserted that the doctors of the Indian Air Force had violated the orders of the Supreme Court by going ahead with the 'two-finger test'. They also added that by conducting such a test, the doctors violated the victim's right to privacy and dignity.

The NSW also informed in their statement that its Chairperson Rekha Sharma has written to the Air Chief Marshal of the Indian Air Force to look into the matter and take necessary action. The Air Chief Marshal has also been asked to enlighten the doctors of the Indian Air Force about the guidelines laid down by the government and the Indian Council of Medical Research about terming the two-finger test as unscientific in 2014.
