DOOMDOOMA: The 11-hour bandh called by North East Students’ Organization (NESO) on Tuesday was total and passed off peacefully with spontaneous participation of people, irrespective of their affiliation to any political party or organization.
People gathered in large numbers in front of the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) office premises on NH-37 where a protest meeting was organized. Several speakers belonging to different ethnic organizations and associations unequivocally condemned the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday and declared their determination to oppose it tooth and nail for the survival of Assamese nationality, its language and culture, even if it was subsequently passed in the Rajya Sabha and got the Presidential approval thereafter to become an Act.
A huge procession was then brought out along the main streets of the town where anti-CAB slogans were raised. In the evening every household lit earthen lamps in sacred memory of the martyrs and assembled at Gandhi Murti to light lamps on the occasion of Swahid Divas.
