GUWAHATI: In a special drive conducted against child labour by the Assam Centre for Rural Development (ACRD), an NGO working on child rights and human trafficking in Kamrup, Kamrup (M) and Baksa districts of Assam, nine children aged between 14 and 17 years were rescued from Sonapur, Kamrup (M) on Friday in collaboration with the District Task Force, Kamrup Metro. Three children from Dakhin Kumarikata and Domni market, Baksa were also rescued by the NGO on Thursday with the help of local police, officials from the Labour Department, and District Child Protection Unit, Baksa.
The children were found working overtime in various establishments with very meagre pay. The rescued were later presented before the Child Welfare Committee before being placed in shelter homes. FIRs have been registered against the employers by the Labour Department in respective police stations.
“Every child deserves the right to a safe and nurturing environment, quality education, and the opportunity to reach their full potential. By working together and taking a stand against child labour, we can create a brighter future for children and ensure that they are protected from exploitation and given the chance to thrive,” said Prerna Changkakati, Executive Director of ACRD.
