GUWAHATI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action taken report from Assam's Director General of Police in connection with a complaint related to alleged fake encounters by the state's police force since May this year. The commission, which sent an email to the DGP on Tuesday, has sought the report within four weeks.

An advocate Arif Jwadder had filed a complaint alleging that the Assam police have conducted many fake encounters. Based on this, the NHRC ordered its registry to send a copy of the complaint to the DGP of Assam demanding a report within four weeks.

In an email to the DGP, the NHRC also wanted to know if the top cop has received any other notice or order on the same matter and if so, to provide a copy of the same within four weeks.

It may be mentioned that the Assam police have apparently launched a crusade to exterminate all kinds of crimes from the state ever since Himanta Biswa Sarma became the chief minister of the state. Operations have been carried out by law enforcement agencies and miscreants apprehended in the past two to three months in connection with various crimes. Many suspected criminals have been injured and killed too, after they tried escaping from police custody.

In August, an arms smuggler was gunned down by police in Karimganj district after the smuggler tried to flee from their custody. The deceased smuggler Nurul Islam was arrested by police and border security force jawans a few days before the incident. Four pistols and mazagines and a pen pistol were recovered from his possession.
