JAMUGURIHAT: National Human Rights and Crime Control Bureau (NHRCCB) state president Nishant Thard has written to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to exempt some vehicles from taxes with special consideration at the toll gates of Assam.

In the press release sent by the state media officer of NHRCCB, Mrinmay Kr. Nath, it was stated that all small vehicles should be exempted from toll gate tax in Assam, like in Gujarat. The Road Transport and Highways Ministry should take measures to fully implement the toll gate entry tax exemption for vehicle owners inhabiting within a radius of 20 km from the toll gates on the national highway. The state president of the organization said vehicles used for transportation of school children should be exempted from paying the toll tax. In the letter, the NHRCCB state president stated that education is the foundation of a prosperous society and smooth access of children to all facilities in educational institutions is essential for their development. This not only imposes an additional financial burden on parents by forcing them to pay taxes, but also impedes their educational progress by causing unnecessary delays in students’ transportation.

The president of the organization said that any vehicle of students of schools, colleges going for educational trips for various purposes should be exempted from toll gate tax and sought necessary steps in this regard. The letter specifically states that access to toll gates should be made completely free for all types of vehicles, either private or commercial, carrying patients for critical and emergency medical needs. The organization also considers it essential to avoid additional levels of stress and financial pressure during the challenging times of critical illness and emergency treatment.
