Nimati Ghat Ferry Mishap: Owner of Boat Pani Ram Kalita Arrested by Dibrugarh Police

The owner of the boat involved in the Nimati Ghat ferry disaster Pani Ram Kalita has been arrested by Dibrugarh police while he was trying for admission in a hospital

GUWAHATI: The owner of the boat which was involved in the Nimati Ghat ferry accident was arrested by police on Monday. Special DGP G.P. Singh shared about this on Twitter on Monday.

His post said the owner of the boat involved in the Nimati Ghat ferry disaster Pani Ram Kalita has been arrested by Dibrugarh police while he was trying for admission in a hospital. Further investigation will be done by Jorhat police, the post said.

On Wednesday, a ferry with the name Ma Kamala capsized after it collided with another ferry, MB Tipkai at around 4 pm at Nimati Ghat in Jorhat. Ma Kamala was leaving Nimati Ghat when it hit MB Tipkai, which was coming from Majuli. The ferry that belonged to Sri Pani Ram Kalita was involved in the collision between two boats on September 8, 2021, in which one was confirmed dead while a few were found to be missing.

On Sunday, the dead body of a woman was found on the bank of the Brahmaputra in Devisinghi Ghat in Tezpur. The deceased woman, whose age was about 25 to 30 years, is suspected to be a victim of the Nimati Ghat boat tragedy which had taken place last week. The woman's identification could not be done, as per last reports available. Meanwhile, six persons were arrested on Saturday regarding the ferry mishap after chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma directed the Jorhat police to register criminal cases against people who are found responsible for the tragic incident.
