LAKHIMPUR: “No definition of the indigenous people is incorporated in the New Land Policy of Assam-2019, though much emphasis has been paid to the indigenous people in the same. So, many issues are vague in the new land policy of the State,” asserted Kishor Kumar Kalita in Lakhimpur on Tuesday.

The prominent writer and columnist of the State, who is also an advocate of the Gauhati High Court, said so while delivering a speech on the topic ‘New Land Policy of Assam-2019’ organized to commemorate journalist Tankeswar Dutta.

North Lakhimpur Press Club (NLPC) has been observing the occasion on February 18 since its former working president Tankeswar Dutta breathed his last on this very day in an accident at Rajgir in Bihar in 2010. This year too, the NLPC paid deep tribute to the departed journalist by organizing the lecture.

The event began with the lighting of earthen lamp in front of the portrait of Tankeswar Dutta by his wife Dimbeswari Dutta Bhuyan. NLPC secretary Karuna Krishna Nath delivered the welcome address highlighting the life and works of Tankeswar Dutta. The speech programme commenced with NLPC president Sailen Baruah in the chair.

In his speech, Kishor Kumar Kalita highlighted various aspects of the land policies of the country adapted since the regime of the British. Regarding the New Land Policy of Assam-2019, he said, “In the new land policy, it must be defined who the indigenous people are as stress is laid on the allotment of the land pattas to them. Political interest may be involved with the matter of allotting the land pattas to the indigenous people of the State without its definition.”
