No Lockdown In Assam, Says Himanta Biswa Sarma

Commenting on the omicron variant, the Chief Minister said that this too increasing in the country and with this third wave could hit the country soon.

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday asserted that there will be no lockdown in the state.

''We need to follow the COVID protocols as the cases are rising in the state but there will be no lockdown in the state as of now,'' he said while speaking to media today.

''We will have to move on without hampering the economy and livelihood of the people,'' he added.

Commenting on the omicron variant, the Chief Minister said that this too increasing in the country and with this third wave could hit the country soon. However, to tackle this, a review meeting will be held.

''A meeting will be conducted with the health department on Thursday to discuss how we can handle the omicron situation in the state,'' he said.

Notably, on Tuesday, the state reported 475 cases of COVID-19 with the highest number of cases in Kamrup (M) with 196 cases.

Meanwhile, five cases of the Omicron virus were detected in Meghalaya, and of these, three are from Shillong, including a tourist from Assam, while two are from RiBhoi.

"Three are from Shillong and two from RiBhoi. We have genome sequencing laboratory, we have sent samples there, we got the confirmation, yes these are Omicron," said Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Sampath Kumar.
