North East to get 15 medicinal plants research fields

Northeast Institute of Science and Technology to set up research fields to boost commercialization of traditional medicinal systems in the region.

Jorhat: With an aim to commercialize the traditional medicinal systems in the Northeast, CSIR-North East Institute of Science & Technology (NEIST), Jorhat has planned to set up 15 multi-locational research fields on medicinal plant species in different states of the region. DoNER Minister Dr Jitendra Singh took to Twitter on Friday, to announce the same.

NEIST intends to set about 15 multi-locational experimental research fields in the region with 5 centers in Assam, four in Arunachal Pradesh, one each in Manipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, and Tripura.

For its first research field, NEIST partnered with Aroma India Pvt. Ltd., Rajapara, Kamprup, Assam.

CSIR-NEIST director G Narahari Sastry said the institute has undertaken this plan to fulfill the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in doubling the farmers' income in the next few years.

''Our main aim is to achieve identification, domestication, and cultivation of rare and endangered species of medicinal plants to sustain the modern pharmaceutical industries.''
