Northeast India's Largest Cold Storage Facility Inaugurated in Chaygaon

The facility has a capacity of 5000 MT with a cost of Rs 24.75 Crs

CHAYGAON: In a major step towards the preservation, packaging and marketing of food based items from the Northeast region of India, the largest cold storage facility of the region was officially inaugurated today by the chief minister of Assam.

This cold storage facility will definitely help farmers and traders of the region. The facility has a capacity of 550 MT to 575 MT in each chiller and freezer room respectively. It is designed to store a variety of products including vegetables, frozen food items, milk and dairy products and seasonal fruits. Tertiary facilities including staff accommodation, canteen, restrooms, drinking water facilities, weighbridge and reach trucks are also present in the facility.

"Our Government has been paying considerable attention to building the necessary infrastructure for the market of agricultural commodities for the convenience of farmers and traders in the State As part of our tireless efforts in this direction, I am pleased to officially inaugurate a cold storage with a capacity of 5,000 metric tonnes at a cost of Rs. 24.75 crores at Chaygaon today," said Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Assam Cabinet Ministers Chandra Mohan Patowary and Atul Bora attended the inaugural meeting along with Guwahati MP Queen Oja. MLAs Hemang Thakuria and Rekibuddin Ahmed were also present along with several other dignitaries.

After the inauguration of the cold storage, the Chief Minister proceeded to attend a public meeting on the grounds of the Chhaigaon College. He mentioned the steps taken by the state government towards the upliftment of the Agricultural economy in the state. He also announced that the government is planning to increase the Minimum Support Price for buying paddy from the farmers of the state. This benefits about 9 lakh farmers under the Arunodoi scheme from the coming month. He also spoke about the development in the Information Technology sector in the state.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated a fruit processing plant in Panery today. Built with an investment of Rs 2.89 Crs, this is expected to become one of the most proficient centres of food preservation in the region. It has been set up by the proprietors of Bhogali Jalpan, Ajit Sarma Baruah and his wife Anjali Sarma Baruah with a 50% subsidy from the state government.
