Noted academician Sahajanand Oja passes away

Noted academician, social activist and sports organizer Sahajanand Oja breathed his last at his residence on Monday night.

NAGAON: Noted academician, social activist and sports organizer Sahajanand Oja breathed his last at his residence on Monday night. He was 85. He retired from Nagaon ADP, College as the principal of the college and also involved in various social works as well as sports organizations of the district as well as the State.

He served Nagaon Sports Association as the president and secretary alternatively for long and also served Indian Cricket Control Board for a while as the assistant manager during which he led the Indian cricket team to Pakistan during eighties in the last century.

Besides, he also served Assam Cricket Association as general secretary from 1977 to 1983. During his tenure as the general secretary of Assam Cricket Association, the first international one day cricket match between India and West Indies was organized at Nehru stadium in Guwahati in 1983. He served ‘Natoon Dainik’, an Assamese daily as a sports scribe for quite sometime here.

Meanwhile, he served College of Education as the founder president too. He leaves behind his wife and two sons here. His demise was mourned by several local organisations like Nagaon Sports Association, Nagaon Press Club, AASU, AJYCP, etc and other dignitaries like local MLA Rupak Sarma, former AGP minister Girindra Kr Boruah.
