Noted physician and playwright Dr Dilip Kumar Boruah passes away in Guwahati

Noted physician, playwright, story teller, script writer in various popular Assamese television serials and former president of Nagaon Zila Xahitya Xabha, Dr Dilip Kumar Boruah breathed his last at a hospital in Guwahati on Thursday morning due to old-age ailments.

NAGAON: Noted physician, playwright, story teller, script writer in various popular Assamese television serials and former president of Nagaon Zila Xahitya Xabha, Dr Dilip Kumar Boruah breathed his last at a hospital in Guwahati on Thursday morning due to old-age ailments.

Born in 1941 in Jorhat, he completed his matriculation examination in 1958 from Jorhat Government HS School and I Sc in 1960 from Jorhat JB College while he got MBBS degree from Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh in 1967 and Master of Surgery (MS) degree in 1974.

The retired surgeon and Joint Director of District Health Services, Dr Boruah started his career as a medical teacher in Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) for over 15 years and was also demonstrator in Anatomy from 1966 to 1970. He retired from service as Joint Director, District Health Services in 2001.

He was also involved in various social work, literary as well as cultural organizations, including Nagaon Zila Xahitya Xabha, Nagaon Bhugali Bihu celebration committee at Nagaon Nehrubali and others till his death.

Besides, he penned more than 40 popular Assamese full script stage dramas and also wrote scripts for more than 50 popular Assamese television serials as well as All India Radio, Guwahati. His dramas like 'Ashraya', 'Ankur', 'Shaya', 'Kalantaror Itihash', 'Sei Samoy Ei Samoy', Shashwata', 'Mohakabya Jen Bedonar Ek Asru Nodi' and some others have been selected by Sangeet Natak Akademi.

Dr Boruah was conferred with the Axam Xahitya Xabha award in 1999 and also received literary pension from Assam Government in 2014. Besides, he achieved the best dramatist award in the North East Drama Festival organized by the Cultural Directorate, Government of Assam in 1998. He leaves behind his wife, only son and a host of relatives.

Various organizations, including Nagaon Zila Xahitya Xabha, All Assam Students' Union (AASU), AJYCP, AAJU district committee, Nagaon Press Club, local MLA Rupak Sarma, and others condoled his demise and paid homage to him. His earthly remains were brought to the office of Nagaon Zila Xahitya Xabha where the members of Nagaon Zila Xahitya Xabha paid floral tribute to him.
