Obituary Gangaram Baruah

Prominent freedom fighter Gangaram Baruah breathed his last at his residence at Roumari village under Behali Legislative Assembly Constituency in Biswanath subdivision on July 26. He was 99.

Born in 1924, Gangaram Baruah had revolted against the misrule and injustice of the British colonial ruling class and joined the Mukti Bahini formed in the country under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi as a volunteer. Gangaram Barua was jailed on charges of being involved in the struggle against the British government. As a citizen of independent India, land was provided to him by the government at Roumari. Later, freedom fighter Gangaram Baruah served for nearly half a century as gaon burha in seven revenue villages of Batiamari under the Biswanath Revenue Circle, and retired in June 2022.

Baruah received central and state freedom fighter pensions. He was felicitated by former Chief Ministers Hiteswar Saikia and Prafulla Kumar Mahanta with a letter of felicitation. Gangaram Baruah leaves behind his wife, three sons, two daughters and a host of relatives. His demise was widely mourned.
