JORHAT: Jorhat police has arrested a person named Diganta Tanti on the charge of killing Homeopathic Doctor Rahul Basumatary. Tanti was arrested from his residence near Tocklai tea estate at the Rajabari area of Jorhat. Rahul Basumatary was found dead on Saturday morning in his rented house at Chandan Nagar under Jorhat Sadar Police Station.
Ananta Das, Officer-in-Charge of Jorhat Sadar Police Station said that Tanti revealed that he was in a relationship with Rahul and that he had murdered him after they fall out in the relationship.
"The Bullet motorcycle which Tanti had stolen was recovered from his possession, and he also showed the places where he had hidden Rahul's smartphone and DSLR camera," the police said. OC Das further said that Tanti was traced through the phone calls from Rahul's phone. His was the only number which did not belong to family or friends, said the police.
Rahul Basumatary, who belonged to Udalguri district was an intern-doctor of J K Memorial Homeopathic Medical College of Jorhat. The young doctor was found lying in a pool of blood on the floor of his rented house in Bylane 4 of Chandan Nagar in Jorhat.
The house owner, a retired Joint Secretary of Government of Assam, Hira Prasad Nath was surprised to see the motorcycle missing from the campus on Saturday morning. Nath tried to call Rahul Basumatary, but did not get any response. He later went to Rahul Basumatary's flat on the second floor and found the door open.
When Nath entered the room, he found the young homeopathic doctor lying on the floor in a pool of blood. He immediately informed the Jorhat Police following which a vegetable-cutting knife was recovered from the spot of the murder.
