One Drowns in the Brahmaputra River on Kartik Purnima

Being unaware of the conditions and currents is often the main cause of drowning in rivers.

DIBRUGARH: A dip in the Brahmaputra proved to be the last for a man in Dibrugarh of Assam. He drowned in the river on the holy occasion of Kartik Purnima.

The project Officer of the Dibrugarh district of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, Deepjyoti Hatikakoti mentioned that the accident happened on the river bank near the office of the Superintendent of Police of Dibrugarh town. The 48-year-old man is said to have gone to take a bath in the Brahmaputra on the occasion of Kartik Purnima. And the dead body was recovered by a search and rescue team of the State Disaster Response Force.

The dead person has been identified as one Minthu Basfor, a 48 year old man. He was a resident of the New Market Harijan colony and had drowned while taking bath.

Another person was also found battling for life in the river. He was rescued by the SDRF team and moved to the Assam Medical College and Hospital for emergency treatment. This person was identified as one Mantu Basfor

The day of Purnima in the holy month of Kartik is considered to be very auspicious by a lot of people and they take a dip in rivers across the country. But being careless while taking bath in rivers carrying high volumes of water can be very dangerous. A lot of people die of drowning in different rivers of the country, especially during religious occasions.

In recent incidents, one man from Barpeta was washed away when he had gone for a bath during the Chhath Puja. Several people lost their lives in Mal Bazar of West Bengal when they went for the immersion of idols after Durga Puja. The levels of water had increased suddenly, leading to several devotees being washed away during the ongoing festivities.
