SILCHAR: Based on reliable inputs about the surreptitious movement of drug smuggler in the interior area of the sub division, Jirighat Police under the command of SDPO Lakhipur launched an operation at Digli under Jirighat Police Station on Tuesday and apprehended a person identified as Mayaj Uddin Laskar (25). Mayaj following cross questioning revealed his native place at Diglang under Kachudaram Police Station.

Search of his body resulted in recovery of four soap cases in which were hid 50.42 grams of heroin, a contraband drug. A case has been registered against him at Jirighat police station. Subsequently, he was produced before the SDJM Court which sent him to jail. After being on bail, Mayaj would be back to square one since smuggling in of drug from Manipur despite all the misadventure is an easy source of making fast buck. Youths are being lured to take to smuggling, say some in the area.

Police however disputes it to say trading in drug or contraband goods from the hotspots of Manipur is by changing hands and to carry it to prospective buyers is always risky. Once caught, all the labour and money are at stake that dampens the spirit and morale of the smugglers. The records give the testimony that there are hardly any repeat offenders. Moreover, the vigilance and surveillance mounted by Lakhipur sub division police have drastically put a lid on the cross state crimes.
