Bokajan: In a major development amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Khatkhati Police shot dead an unidentified gunman in an exchange of fire at the Lalmati area of Karagoan along the Assam-Nagaland boundary on Saturday evening.
“The Khatkhati police laid an ambush in the Lalmati area of Karagaon based on specific information regarding the movement of a gang of armed miscreants in the area. The uninformed gang opened fire on encountering the police team and we had to retaliate. In the ensuing exchange of fire, our police team managed to knock down one. However, others escaped under cover of darkness,” said Bokajan SDPO John Das.
“The injured bullet-riddled man was immediately shifted to Bokajan Civil Hospital but was pronounced dead by the attending doctor. A 7.65 pistol and a mobile phone have been seized from possession of the slain miscreant. We are yet to ascertain the identification of the person and further investigation is on,” the SDPO added.
An established businessman of the Khatkhati locality was shot dead by a gang of armed robbers at his residence back in June, 2019. The gang decamped away with cash, jewellery and the licensed pistol of the businessman. The incident has since then remained a mystery as police are yet to make any breakthrough in the case.
