One killed in road accident; police resort to firing to control irate mob in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: Police in the Lakhimpur district had to resort to firing in the air in order to control an irate mob following a fatality in an accident that took place on Wednesday.

The accident took place on NH-15 Lakhimpur by-pass at Saboti around 9.00 am. Sources said that a Datsun Go car in full speed, bearing registration number AR 01 H 0485, hit a motorcyclist and dragged him along the road for several yards. The motorcyclist has been identified as Nur Islam who was a wage earner by profession. Nur Islam was going to his work site on his Pulsar bike bearing registration number AS 07 M 2088. He died on the spot.

Following the accident, a large crowd gathered at the spot and held up the car driver along with the two passengers of the car. Fuming with anger, the irate mob allegedly started to beat the car driver. At that time, a team of police personnel from Lilabari Police Outpost arrived at the spot and tried to take the three persons into custody to shift them to the police station. But the irate mob prevented the police from doing so. At that time, police fired in the air to control the mob and to save the three persons from the mob. Later, Lakhimpur police managed to disperse the mob and took the three persons into their custody

The owner of the car has been identified as Lingdung Buni, presently residing at Police Down Colony of Naharlagun under Papumpare district of Arunachal Pradesh, who is a permanent resident of Pidi village of Mechuka under West Siang district of the same state. Lakhimpur police seized the car.
