One student appears before anti-ragging committee in Dibrugarh

Only one student appeared before the Anti-Ragging Committee (ARC) of Dibrugarh University on the third day of hearing on Friday

DIBRUGARH: Only one student appeared before the Anti-Ragging Committee (ARC) of Dibrugarh University on the third day of hearing on Friday. "Five students could not attend the hearing as they are in judicial custody. The ARC is trying to get the permission from the authority concerned to take their hearing in the jail," said Dr Paramananda Sonowal, Registrar, Dibrugarh University. He said a total 12 out of 17 students have appeared before the commission so far. "Out of which punishment to four accused students has been announced by the committee," he said.

The Committee was constituted on Wednesday to investigate the possibility of lapses/ deficiency in dealing with matters of ragging in the University campus. Anand Sharma, the Dibrugarh University ragging victim, underwent a critical surgery of his spine at a private hospital in Dibrugarh by a 5-member team of doctors led by neurosurgeon Dr Anil Pannalal carried out the three-hour long successful operation.

Dibrugarh police have arrested five accused in connection with the Dibrugarh University ragging incident. Rahul Chetri, the main accused of the ragging case is still absconding. "Till now we have arrested five accused in connection with the case and our search operation is on to nab Rahul Chetri and Kalyan Dutta," said Bitul Chetia, additional SP(HQ).
