The bandh, which began at 5 am, had been called to protest against the appointment process in the ONGC as the organizations alleged that locals had been deprived of being appointed in various posts in ONGC.

The members of the organizations picketed in front of different offices and workshops of ONGC and restricted vehicles from transporting officers and employees to their respective offices and sites. Meanwhile, 40 protesters were detained in Nazira and another 12 protesters, including president of Sangrami Yuba Mancha’s Sivasagar Town Committee, Rajesh Das, were apprehended in Sivasagar.

Earlier, on Wednesday, ONGC had made an appeal to the agitating organizations not to resort to the proposed ONGC bandh.
