Organizations express concern over rampant gambling in Haflong

With the excuse of Diwali festival, rampant gambling is going on in Haflong without any restrictions.

HAFLONG: With the excuse of Diwali festival, rampant gambling is going on in Haflong without any restrictions. This has caused serious concern among the conscious people of Haflong. 'Jhandi Munda' is held in different places of Haflong city in the evening. This gambling goes on till late night. Such gambling is done in Haflong Rail Colony, Rail Guest House, Bazar etc.

The conscious people have demanded strict intervention of the district administration to stop these activities. Besides, they demanded to stop the spread of the menace of drugs in Halfong.

The Dimasa Mothers' Association had earlier appealed to the Deputy Commissioner to stop gambling and anti-social activities around Haflong and other adjoining villages. The Dimasa Mothers' Association stated, "It was observed that with the onset of Diwali and Kali Puja, many youths are seen openly playing 'Jhandi Munda' and other forms of gambling in an around Haflong and nearby villages, thereby polluting the social atmosphere. Many youths are going astray and also seen indulging in alcoholism. Social harmony in those areas is getting disturbed due to these social evils. Parents are worried about their children's future. If these activities are not stop immediately, there will be ever increasing practices of alcoholism and gambling of all forms in the society without any fear of law and order and thus, it will gradually engulf the entire society, hampering the progress of the youths."

Dimasa Mother's Association. therefore. appealed to the Deputy Commissioner to take strong action in this regard.
