Organizations postpone stir after Goalpara DC's intervention

GOALPARA: The 40 organizations of Goalpara district who had a scheduled programme on Monday of staging symbolic protest in front of the Goalpara DC's office against the Meghalaya government, has postponed its programme after Goalpara Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka intervened in the issue.

"The Goalpara district administration has already taken immediate and positive initiatives to solve the issue. They have also communicated with their Meghalaya counterpart. Besides this, the district administration has invited us for a discussion on Tuesday. Thus, we have temporarily suspended our agitation program," informed Animul Hoque Choudhury, president of the Goalpara district AAMSU.

Meanwhile, Varnali Deka while talking with this correspondent said, "We had a serious discussion with the North and West Garo Hills district deputy commissioners. They have taken up the issue with the government and trying to sort out ways to resolve the issue. We hope, everything will be alright and normalcy will return to the track."

It may be mentioned that the local administrations of the Garo Hills district, due to COVID pandemic and safety reasons, have not allowed the thousand of traders from Assam to enter the State. Reportedly, it has also prohibited the entry of the passenger busses, taxis for the same reason.
