Akhil Gogoi Led Raijor Dal-Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) Alliance Over

SIVASAGAR: Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal (RD) President Akhil Gogoi on Sunday said that his party has broken the alliance with regional front Assam Jatiya Parishad, led by Lurinjyoti Gogoi, the former general secretary of AASU. The two new regional parties, which were formed out of the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act, had teamed up in February 2021 and contested the Assembly Election in March-April.

The sivasagar MLA said that they were not in alliance during the polls. They broke the tie-up in the middle of the election. There was no united opposition platform, and so they parted ways. It is said that none of the two parties announced the falling apart of their alliance during the election.

As per the reports, Gogoi strolled free on July 1 after 567 days of imprisonment after his arrest in December 2019 for his alleged role in the fierce act of anti-CAA movement in Assam, as the National Investigation Agency neglected to outline any charge against him and three partners.

While asking why the party did not officially proclaim the end of the alliance before the polls, Gogoi said, "We contested the assembly election alone. As of now, we are not in any alliance with the AJP."

Gogoi further said that he doesn't know and don't want to comment on them. He didn't want to have three poles in the election, but the Congress cheated them by breaking the united front. Around then, they also broke the alliance with the AJP. The MLA added that after joining hands with the AJP, he himself requested to people that they should not vote for his candidates, but vote for only the strongest BJP nominees.

It is to be mentioned that the Assam Jatiya Parishad was jointly created by the AASU and the Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) in 2020. On the other hand, Gogoi, who contested as an Independent from Sivasagar, became the first Assamese to win an election by staying in jail and without any physical campaigning. He also became the first person in the Assam Assembly to take oath on May 21 as a prisoner MLA, who arrived from jail on special permission by the court.
