'Padmanath Gohain Baruah fought to establish Assamese language as an independent language'

LAKHIMPUR: "By spearheading a literary movement, Padmanath Gohain Baruah fought with pen to establish the Assamese language as a purely independent language. He left an indelible imprint on Assamese literary world and social life. He introduced various new trends in the Assamese literature as a novelist, dramatist, poet and noted journalist in the beginning of the 20th century," stated Dr. Anjan Kumar Ojah, a prominent academician, critic of Assamese literature-cum-retired Principal of the Choyduar College.

Dr. Ojah said so in Lakhimpur while delivering the third memorial lecture, organized by Uttar Lakhimpur Xahitya Xabha in connection with the Xahitya Kandari Padmanath Gohain Baruah Divas. The event was organized at the conference hall of the literary body, located at North Lakhimpur town, on Monday. The agenda of the event began with the unfurling of the literary body's flag by president Dr. Premananda Howborah. Tileswar Borah, the former president of the Lakhimpur District Senior Citizens' Association-cum-retired Principal of Garehaga-Bahpati HS School, garlanded the statue of Padmanath Gohain Baruah.

The lecture event commenced with president Dr. Premananda Howborah in the chair and under the management of secretary Tilak Deka. It was inaugurated by Dr. Bubul Kumar Saikia, the Principal of LTK College while vice-president of the literary body, Dipak Hazarika delivered the welcome address. In the event, Dr. Anjan Kumar Ojah delivered the memorial lecture on a designated topic, "Non-co-operation Movement and Assam". During the course of his lecture, Dr. Ojah brought a number of unknown facts of India's Freedom Movement into light.
