TINSUKIA: The Oil Palm Mega Plantation drive under National Mission on Edible Oils –Oil Palm (NMEO-OP) was ceremoniously launched jointly by Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma and Swami Ramdev after planting palm tree seedlings at Laupani village Saikhowa close to Dr Bhupen Hazarika Setu (Dholla-Sadiya Bridge) under Sadiya sub-division in Tinsukia district on Tuesday. The programme was organised by Department of Agriculture Assam in association with district administration Tinsukia and Patanjali Foods Ltd which is implementing partner for Tinsukia district. A 100 bigha of land within the proposed area of Uttar-Pub Sangskritik Samanya Ketra has been earmark for oil palm plantation.
The CM said that Assam has been spending crores of rupees annually in the name of importing palm oil from Malaysia and Indonesia and thus the government has decided to cultivate its own palm trees and sell the oil extracted from palm tree in Assam and urged the people to benefit from palm cultivation without hesitation. In his speech Swami Ramdev said, “India imports palm oil worth Rs 100,000 crore from abroad and the central government has to take up schemes for palm cultivation to bridge the gap adding that Patanjali will set up a world-class hospital in Guwahati and two medical colleges in Assam along with palm oil cultivation in Assam of Assam.” The yoga guru also said that he plans to provide education to 10,000 meritorious students.
