Partition Horrors Remembrance Day observed in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: The Partition Horrors Remembrance Day (Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Divas) was observed in Lakhimpur on Sunday evening. In this regard, the Lakhimpur district administration organized a programme in the auditorium of Lakhimpur District Library. Deputy Commissioner Sumit Sattawan explained the objective of the event which was followed by an all-religion prayer programme with the participation of Hindu, Islam, Sikh, Jain, Christian and Buddhist devotees praying for the eternal peace of the soul of million victims who were killed during the carnage, which was intense with massacres, arson, forced conversions, mass abductions, and savage sexual violence due to partition on August 14 in 1947.

Revenue and Disaster Management, Hills Area Development Minister Jogen Mohan attended the event as chief guest who said that the Union Government had decided to observe August 14 as Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Divas (Partition Horrors Remembrance Day) every year to commemorate the partition victims. He expected that such situation would never repeat in the nation in future and appealed to all to coexist with peace, harmony and integration. Professor of North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) Dr. Chandra Manse, Professors of Lakhimpur Girls' College Nipan Panging, Durlabh Raj Taid, Professor of LTK College Dibyajyoti Chetiya attended the programme as appointed speakers. Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka, prominent citizens of the district were present in the programme. Later a candle march was taken out from the District Library premises to Gandhi Maidan of North Lakhimpur town in connection with the event.
