Peasants' rebellion at Pothorughat glaring example of courage and patriotism

MANGALDAI: The Indian Army in their continuous unique homage paying ceremony in memory of 140 Krishak Swahids who were brutally gunned down by the British at the historic peasants' rebellion at Pothorughat on January 28, 1894, on Tuesday offered their deep salute and floral homage at the Krishad Swahid Memorial at Pothorughat.

Commander of Red Horns Brigade Brigadier, Gaurav Rishi on behalf of the Army took part in the homage-paying function as the chief guest and offered floral tribute in full military style and honour. He also offered felicitation to the Veer Naris, family members of Krishak Swahids and freedom fighters. Students of JNV, Darrang with two patriotic musical performances added new colour to the function.

"The historic peasants' rebellion at Pothorughat 124 years back is a glaring example of courage, valour and patriotism of our countrymen as the village farmers of both the Hindus and Muslims got united to revolt against the British rulers and these unsung 140 Krishak Swahids initiated the freedom movement against the British rulers from this rural area of Darrang. The younger generation should realize the supreme sacrifice offered these Krishak Swahids so that we can protect and honour the sovereignty of our motherland," said Brigadier Gaurav Rishi while addressing the function.

Col Rahul Singh Commanding Officer of Red Horns unit, Additional Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Chakravarty, Additional Superintendent of Police Satyajith Nath, Salman Ravi of BBC, New Delhi also took part in the Krishak Swahid Divas celebration. A good number of ex-army personnel, family members of Krishak Swahids and freedom fighters also attended the function. The Army has been celebrating the Krishak Swahid Divas in full military honour since 2001 at the initiative of the then Governor of Assam, Lt. Gen. (retired) SK Sinha.
