People in large numbers bid farewell to AASU leader Chitta Ranjan Basumatari

LAKHIMPUR: Popular student leader of North Assam, vice-president of All Assam Students' Union (AASU), Chitta Ranjan Basumatari bade goodbye from the organization on Monday in a crowded programme held in Dhemaji.

Notably, Basumatari declared his resignation from the AASU on Saturday after he was nominated as the convener of Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) for Jonai, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Dibrugarh. On Sunday, he performed all formalities of his resignation from the AASU in Guwahati and arrived at his native place Jonai under Dhemaji district on Monday.

On that day, the Jonai and Bahir Jonai regional committees of AASU, along with several institutions and organization, extended him farewell felicitation at Jonai Town Club. Then he set out to Dhemaji. On the way to Dhemaji, Basumatari was feted by people, institutions and organizations at Telam, Dekapam, Simen Chapori, Demou, Silapothar, Sissi-Borgaon and Sripani. As soon as the student leader entered the Dhemaji constituency, people in large numbers welcomed him with Gayan-Bayan and traditional custom at Kanibeel bridge. Then he was escorted to the Dhemaji Public Auditorium with almost 700 bikers and 100 four wheelers.

In the farewell programme, organized by Dhemaji district AASU at Dhemaji Public Auditorium, Dhemaji AASU and 16 regional committees under it, AJYCP, All Tai Ahom Students' Union, Gorkha Students' Union, Scheduled Caste Students' Union, Bus Owners' Association, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivsagar, Jorhat and Golaghat district units of AASU and many other institutions and organizations, including common people, extended him farewell felicitation. He also quit the organization with tears in his eyes, declaring that he would work for Assam and the Assamese community with his non-compromising attitude as he had done in the past.

Notably, Chitta Ranjan Basumatari constructed a remarkable stretch of River Jiadhol embankment along with the local public and raised his voice strongly to demand the mitigation of the flood and erosion problem. He spearheaded the AASU to intensify the stir against big river dam, CAA and to resolve the crucial and fundamental problems of the district. He left no stone unturned in order get the Poba Reserve Forest declared as National Park and to get the Dhemaji Engineering College established.
