SILCHAR: PHED Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah launched the financial assistance programme through DBT as well as flagged off Orunodoi Month at Cachar district on Saturday. The minister ceremonially launched the DBTs of financial assistance for 81,544 families at a programme held at Gandhi Bhawan in Silchar.

Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah recalled the unprecedented flood and havoc at Silchar a couple of months back. He said that under the able leadership of Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma the government has tried to ensure maximum relief to flood-affected people. "This kind of effective step was never taken in terms of flood affected people and flood victims had to wait for years to get their due compensation," the minister said. An amount of almost 40 crores was disbursed at one go to 81,544 flood-affected families of Cachar district whose houses were either fully damaged or partially damaged.

The families who had their houses fully damaged received an amount of 95,100/- as per relief guidelines. Out of 80,796 partially damaged houses, Rs. 5,200 were received by 26,422 partially damaged pucca houses and Rs. 3,800 to 54,374 partially damaged kutcha houses. The minister also assured that restoration of public infrastructure damages like roads, dykes, water supply schemes, schools etc. are going on. While flagging off the Oronodoi Month, the minister stated that this flagship scheme of the government which started from October 2020 helped many women help realise economic and nutritional security. He further explained that since the government will increase the monthly assistance from Rs 1000 to Rs 1250, a proper a field survey of Orunodoi beneficiaries is of utmost importance. The door to door survey shall entail a process of verification which shall be followed by exclusion of ineligible and non-genuine beneficiaries from the Orunodoi beneficiary database, stated a press release.
