Guwahati: A photo that has gone viral on social media, depicts the sorry state of affair in some parts of Assam. In the photo, a woman is seen carrying her father-in-law, a COVID positive man, on her back to the hospital. The incident took place in Raha, Assam. Assamese actress Aimee Baruah has praised woman power and lauded the efforts of Niharika Das, the young woman in the photo carrying her COVID positive father-in-law Thuleshwar Das on her back to reach a hospital. The popular actress wished "this inspiration of a woman a speedy recovery".

People commenting on Baruah's tweet have praised woman power and the efforts of Niharika. Except for a couple of people like Devabrata Dutta who said in his comments "can we not romanticise their misery? It's an utter failure if someone has to carry a patient on their back due to lack of money and government facilties…." and Dr Geeta Dutta who wrote, "nothing to rejoice actually. It reflects the dilapidating infrastructure, which led her to do so", most have praised the woman for what she did. Some praised the woman for setting another example of caring for in-laws.

Lauding woman power is alright and praising the woman for what she has done to care for her father-in-law is great but we should not miss the larger message that this particular photo is conveying.

Not denying that starting from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to Health Minister Keshab Mahanta, everybody is doing their bit, but few loopholes remain. CM Sarma has appointed Guardian Ministers for every district of Assam to look into healthcare facilities and other developmental needs of each district but as this picture shows, some parts of the state still lack the basic amenities. It is just a few days that the Himanta Biswa Sarma government has taken over, maybe it is too early to expect that everything will get fixed overnight.
