Pigs culled due to African Swine Fever in Kalaigaon

As many as 39 pigs and piglets have died in the outbreak of African Swine Fever since its recurrence from June this year

KALAIGAON: As many as 39 pigs and piglets have died in the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) since its recurrence from June this year. District Veterinary Officer of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary, Dr Nagen Kalaita stated on Thursday that 39 pigs died this month due to ASF.

So far, 191 pigs have been culled to prevent further spread of ASF, DVO Dr Nagen Kalita said. He added that the farmers who lost pigs due to ASF would be compensated for their losses once the outbreak is declared a disaster. The farmers, Bapan Boro and Mridul Baglari of Dakhin Kuiyabil, have lost their pigs due to ASF and the veterinary department has culled these livestock to prevent the disease. The highly contagious pig disease has currently affected 33 villages in Kalaigaon. The pigs and piglets were culled at Kuiyabil on Thursday in presence of the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary department officials.
