Dibrugarh: The recent remarks of Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal downplaying the need for assigning an official name to the Bogibeel Bridge, have elicited mixed reactions.
The minister, while he was in Guwahati recently to inaugurate the three-day National Janajati Sports Meets in Tepesia, said that one should not get into the controversy of naming the bridge, rather focus on the benefits the bridge would bring for Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. While some people of the Chutia community are still demanding it to be named after Sati Sadhani, the last Chutia queen, many from the Ahom community want it to be christened after Sukapha – the founder of the Ahom dynasty. Apart from such demands, there is also a section of people which supports Goyal’s views on putting more attention to the bridge’s multifaceted utility.
