GUWAHATI: Narendra Modi will be visiting Assam soon to lay the foundation stones of a new bridge over the Brahmaputra river near the city of Guwahati.

As of now there are two bridges over the majestic river in the city of Guwahati, the old Saraighat bridge and the new Saraighat bridge adjacent to it. Another new bridge is already under construction across the river. Aimed to be completed by late next year, this one would connect the Mazgaon region of North Guwahati to the Bharalumukh - Machkhua region of Guwahati.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made the announcement on Wednesday. He said that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi will soon be visiting the state again. One of the core agendas of the upcoming visit will be to lay the foundation stone of the new bridge over the Brahmaputra river. This new bridge will connect the commercial town of Sualkuchi, mainly known for Assam Silk, to Palasbari.

This new project will drastically reduce the travel time between the two locations. As of now the time needed to travel between the two locations take more than two hours as there is no other mode of transport available apart from the road. Once the project is completed, people from the Barpeta and the Nalbari districts will also be able reach the LGBI Airport in Guwahati at a much lesser time. It will help the movement of people as well as goods between Kamrup, Kamrup Metro, Barpeta, Nalbari, Goalpara and Baksa districts of the state

This major project will require an overall expenditure estimated at around Rs 4000 Crs. And it has been already approved by the Finance Ministry under Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The estimated length of the bridge has been kept at 4.08 kilometers from approach to approach.

The construction of the new bridge over the Brahmaputra in Tezpur has also been completed.
