PM Narendra Modi dedicates Lakhimpur Cancer Centre for service of mankind

LAKHIMPUR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday dedicated the Lakhimpur Cancer Centre to the nation and for the service of mankind. The Prime Minister virtually inaugurated the medical institution along with Dibrugarh, Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Darrang, Tezpur and Jorhat Cancer Centres from Dibrugarh while attending a public function at Khanikar Stadium.

In this connection, a ceremonial programme was organized at the Cancer Centre campus at Saboti of North Lakhimpur town. In the programme, Dr. Sudhanshu Sekhar Ghosh, the Superintendent of the Cancer Centre, briefed whole about the medical institution. Deputy Commissioner-in charge, Manoj Kumar Baruah delivered the welcome address. He said that the Cancer Centre would provide noteworthy services to cancer patients, not only of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts but also of the neighbouring State of Arunachal Pradesh.

"This institution will bring high-quality cancer care closer home for patients and reduce their financial burden. Developed infrastructure is supplemented in the Cancer Centre with plans to develop trained human resources, awareness and prevention programmes, and a unified technology platform to deliver high-quality care," the Deputy Commissioner-in charge added

Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka attended the event as guest of honour, wherein ADCs Manorama Morang, Getalee Duworah, academic and administrative staff of Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital, district officers of the Health Department and other departments were present.

Lakhimpur Cancer Centre has been established by the Assam Cancer Care Foundation (ACCF) and is a joint venture of the Government of Assam and Tata Trusts. ACCF is executing a project to build South Asia's largest affordable cancer care network with 17 Cancer Centres spread across the State. Under Phase 1 of the project, out of 10 centres, the construction of seven centres, including, Lakhimpur Cancer Centre, have been completed while three hospitals are at various levels of construction. Phase 2 of the project will witness the construction of seven new cancer hospitals in the State.

Lakhimpur Cancer Centre has been built in an area of 90,000 sq ft. The construction of the project started on November 18 of 2019 and it concluded on April 24 of the current year. It is facilitated with a total of 44 beds, 40 general beds and 4 emergency beds, along with Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy, Daycare, Radiology, Minor OT, blood storage and laboratory facilities.
