PM Narendra Modi Phones Assam CM, Inquires About Flood Situation

Over 30,000 hectares of croplands have been damaged across the state and over 950 villages across the state have been swamped

GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi phoned Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday and inquired about the flood situation in the state and assured all possible help to the state during these troubled times.

Himanta Biswa Sarma informed about this via a tweet on Tuesday morning. The chief minister said PM Modi has telephoned him and learnt about the situation in Assam in the wake of floods. The PM also assured him that the Centre would provide all sorts of help to combat the menace. Sarma mentioned that the current floods has gravely impacted livelihood in Assam and expressed his thankfulness to Modi for standing with the state at this hour of crisis.

More than 3.5 lakh people have been affected in 21 of the 33 districts of Assam. Two children were killed in the floods – one in Morigaon district and another in Barpeta district. The worst affected districts in the floods are – Lakhimpur, Majuli, Darrang, Biswanath, Dhemaji and Sivasagar. Over 30,000 hectares of croplands have been damaged and over 950 villages across the state have been swamped.

Around 70 per cent of the area of Kaziranga National Park, which is spread over a number of districts including Nagaon, Sonitpur, Biswanath and Karbi Anglong, have been inundated affecting wild animals. Four hog deers have been killed so far, a forest official said.

Over 40 relief camps have been set up to provide shelter to people affected in floods. As per the Central Water Commission, the water level in the Brahmaputra is likely to rise by 5-15cm compared to Tuesday morning.
