Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary Reopens, All You Need to Know of Eco Camp, Biodiversity

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Pobitora National Park, is actually a wildlife sanctuary that is situated in the Morigaon district of Assam. Standing on the South banks of the river Brahmaputra, it was established in 1987 and encompasses 38.85 square kilometres, providing wetlands and grasslands for the famous Indian rhinoceros. It is also home to the state's biggest population of Indian rhinoceros.

Biodiversity Of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

At least fifteen grass species may be found in the grasslands of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, including Whip Grass, Cynodon Dactylon, Vetiver, Southern Cutgrass, Phragmites Karka, Signalgrass, and Ravennagrass. The grasslands offer food and habitat for Indian rhinoceros, which are found in Assam in great numbers. Feral water buffalo, golden jackal, and wild boar, are amongst the other animals are found in the reserve. The steep areas are also home to the Indian leopard, rhesus monkey, and barking deer. It is also declared as an IBA, meaning Important Bird Area, providing a home to over two thousand migrating birds as well as a variety of reptiles. There are presently about 102 rhinoceros in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, which witnessed an increase of 10% over the previous six years. It is also home to approximately 375 different bird species.

Pobitora Eco Camp

Pobitora Village Eco Camp provides traditional Assamese thatch huts that are fitted with a variety of contemporary conveniences, allowing travellers to enjoy a real ethnic stay while also ensuring that they have all the conveniences that they might need to have a happy stay. Asiatic Water Buffalo

  1. The Wild Asiatic Water Buffalo, usually described as the Bubalus Arnee, is located in the Central Indian woods, primarily in states like Assam, Madhya Pradesh, and Arunachal Pradesh.
  2. It was recently found in the woods of Maharashtra, prompting the State government of Maharashtra to establish the Kolamarka forest region as a protection area for Asiatic Wild Buffalo.
  3. The Asiatic buffalo does have the largest horn span of all of the world's bovids.
  4. The marshes, alluvial grasslands, river valleys, and swamps, are the most common habitats for wild buffalo. They are more commonly found in places with a lot of water and resource.


The Wildlife Sanctuary:

  1. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary contains the world's largest population of one-horned rhinos, second only to Kaziranga National Park which is in Assam as well.
  2. Because of the same topography and flora, it is sometimes referred to as 'Mini Kaziranga.'
  3. The one-horned rhinoceros which is an endangered species, along with other animals such as Leopard Cat, Leopard, Fishing cat, Feral Buffalo, Jungle cat, Chinese pangolins, Wild pigs, and others, call the wildlife refuge home.
  4. Wet savannahs of Arundo donax and Saccharum make up around 72 percent of Pobitora Sanctuary. Water bodies cover the rest of the land.
  5. Because it develops thick clumps on the surface of water, water hyacinth is a serious concern for this area, especially for waterfowl.
