BONGAIGAON: Police Commemoration Day was observed on Thursday at 156 Bn CRPF, Kukurmari, Assam. Jaidev Kesri, DIGP, OPS Range, Bongaigaon CRPF, Kailash Nath, 2I/C, Commandant-156 Bn (CCD) CRPF, paid floral tributes to the martyrs at the Martyrs' Memorial on the occasion and a salute was given to the martyrs by the ceremonial guard and a two-minute silence was observed by the personnel of 156 Bn CRPF and DIG (OPS) Range, Bongaigaon.
Addressing the troops on the occasion, DIG (OPS) Range, Bongaigaon said that National Police Commemoration Day was observed every year on October 21 to remember sacrifices of 10 brave soldiers of 3 Bn, 2 Bn and 1 Battalion of CRPF who died in the Chinese attack in 1959. On October 21, 1959, Chinese troops opened fire and threw grenades at 20 CRPF soldiers in Ladakh. Ten of the brave CRPF soldiers attained martyrdom and seven others sustained injuries in the incident. More than a month later, on November 28, 1959, the Chinese troops handed over ten of the brave CRPF martyrs to India. Their cremation was held with full police honors at the Hot Springs in North Eastern Ladakh.
