NAGAON: The one-man probe panel led by Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Assam Paban Borthakur conducted a public hearing in connection with the recent alleged police firing on the student leader Kirti Kamal Bora at Nagaon circuit house on Friday. During the hearing, the one-man probe panel recorded the statements from eye-witnesses of the gruesome incident, sources said.
The family members of the victim student leader, the police personnel of the anti-narcotics squad who were allegedly involved in the incident and other members of the students fraternity as well as the Superintendent of Police Anand Mishra, officer-in-charge of Nagaon Police Station recorded their respective statements before the probe panel on Friday, sources added.
A team from anti-narcotics squad led by ASI Pradip Bonia launched a search operation against drugs peddlers at Kachalukhuwa Tiniali on January 22. During the operation, the police personnel picked up a youth and beat him on the road itself when the former student leader and ex general secretary of Nowgong College Students' Union, Kirti Kamal Bora arrived at the spot and quizzed about the reason for thrashing the youth. Significantly, being angered on his question, one ASI named Pradip Bonia leapt on him and allegedly fired at his lower limbs and injured following which various students organizations including AASU, AJYCP and Asom Chatra Parishad went on rampage and staged strong protests against the alleged police firing and sought a judicial enquiry into the entire episode.
Meanwhile, the State government declared a commissioner level probe into the incident and constituted the probe panel led by Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Assam Paban Borthakur.
