Kokhrajhar: In an encounter between the Kokhrajhar police and the newly floated United Liberation of Bodoland, two militants were killed in the wee hours of September 18. The incident is said to have taken place in the Ultapani Reserve Forest area.
As per a police official, "Two suspected Bodo militants were gunned down by the police in an encounter after they allegedly opened fire in Kokrajhar district in the early hours on Saturday."
The police and the army had launched a joint operation after receiving a tip about the presence of armed militants in the Lungsung forest.
"When the team had approached the armed militants in the jungle, they opened fire targeting the security forces. The police retaliated and later we found two persons were lying on the ground injured. They were taken to the RNB Hospital in Kokrajhar where they were declared brought dead," the police official added.
The deceased militants have been identified as Jangshar Mushahary and Janak Kr Brahma. Both of them are 23 years old and are a resident of Kokhrajhar.
Allegedly, the militants were involved in a case of extortion in the Bismuri area of Kokhrajhar district.
A total of 2 pistols, 8 grenades, 8 rds of live ammunition, 14 rds of empty cartridges and warlike stores were recovered after the police busted one of their camps.
The information was also shared by the Special Director General of Assam, GP Singh, on his official Twitter handle. He wrote, "In a late night/early morning operation, @KokrajharP has busted a camp of newly formed terror group ULB at Ultapani area. Two cadres have been declared dead after exchange of fire between Police/Security forces and terrorists. Two pistols and grenades recovered. "
The United Liberation of Bodoland had earlier released a video statement claiming that they would carry our blasts in Assam from the month of October if their demands were not fulfilled.
