Dibrugarh: In the midst of the increasing rate of crime in general and against women in particular, several people here have highlighted the poor condition of street lights in several parts of the town here. Special mention has been made of the solar lights installed on the Dibrugarh Town Protection Dyke.
Used by many people of both the genders for various purposes, the fact that some of the lights in between had stopped functioning or were suffering from some technical glitch is becoming a serious matter of concern for them. They also opined that such conditions were ideal for the rise of other anti-social activities too. The road leading to Assam Medical College and Hospitals (AMCH) was also lined with street lights, but they couldn’t dispel darkness in an expected manner. Although the road was finally repaired after lying in a pathetic condition for long, lighting continued to be an area of worry, they said. With less number of people out on the streets on wintry evenings, such conditions were again conducive for perpetrators to carry out their nefarious designs. The road next to Grahman Bazar Eidgah Field, where a person was recently stabbed to death by a group, suffered acutely from poor lighting. In fact, many locals even said that the absence of lights acted as a fillip for the perpetrators.
