Preparations underway to celebrate Me-Dam-Me-Phi in Lakhimpur

Like the previous years, Me-Dam-Me-Phi, the sacred festival of the Tai Ahom community, will be celebrated in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: Like the previous years, Me-Dam-Me-Phi, the sacred festival of the Tai Ahom community, will be celebrated in Lakhimpur district this year too. Me-Dam-Me-Phi is the most important ancestor worship communal festival celebrated by the Ahom people on January 31 every year in memory of the departed. It is a festival to show respect to the departed ancestors and remember their contribution to society. In the district this year, the festival will be celebrated at the Academy Higher Secondary School premises, located at Chetia Gaon near North Lakhimpur town with a two-day long agenda on January 30 and January 31.

In a view to smooth conduction of the programme, a celebration committee was formed with Debo Buragohain as president, Hilton Konwar as working president, Ranjan Borpatra Gohain and Raju Tamuli as chief secretaries at a public meeting held recently. A souvenir will also be published on the occasion. Dipul Tamuli Phukan was selected as the editor of the souvenir while Paramananda Chetia was selected as the president of the editorial board. Along with the traditional events, a cultural rally titled 'Samanway Yatra' will be taken out in connection with the programme. Moreover, Ahom Kunwori competition, along with other cultural events, will be held as part of the agenda of the event. The organizing committee appealed to all to extend cooperation to conduct the programme successfully.
