Golaghat: In a bid to ensure a law and order situation, the Golaghat District Administration on Wednesday imposed Section 144 CrPC till further notice

This move comes in the wake of the recent violence that has flared up across the country following the derogatory remarks made against the Prophet Mohammad by former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.

Golaghat district happens to be the fifth district in the state to have taken preventive measures and it was preceded by the districts of Kamrup, Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi.

Several districts in the state have been marked as sensitive and susceptible to unrest, as a result of which, there is a need to keep the situation under control and prevent any kind of turmoil from taking place and ensure that "public peace and tranquility" is maintained.

The Golaghat district administration has strictly prohibited the gathering of four or more persons for any reason whatsoever in the entire district.

"Pre-planned congregation, the sudden unforeseen congregation of any nature shall be conducted only with prior approval of the district magistrate, Golaghat. No distribution of leaflets, banners, and posters which may lead to a breach of the peace shall be allowed in Golaghat district," the order said.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Saturday, informed that the government is keeping a close eye on the law and order situation in the state.
