LAKHIMPUR: Agitation programme against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) continues in Lakhimpur district. In the wake of the Union Government’s move to pass the Bill in the winter session of the Parliament and Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Finance Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma’s declaration of the Bill to be passed, the Lakhimpur district body of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad (AJYP) once again initiated agitation programme in Lakhimpur on Wednesday against the issue.

Expressing vehement resentment against the Bill and Union Government’s initiatives to pass the same, the activists of the organization staged two-hour long sit-in in front of Hanuman Mandir in North Lakhimpur town demanding immediate scrapping of the Bill. While staging the programme in association with the North Lakhimpur regional unit, the protesters rocked the environment by shouting various slogans to flay the BJP-led Union and State governments, RSS, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and to demand scrapping of the Bill.

According to the organization, the CAB is an unconstitutional, communal Bill carrying tremendous threat to destroy the demography of the Assamese community. “This Bill will destroy the existence of the Assamese language and culture and collapse the whole democratic system of the nation. So, the people of the State will not approve of the Bill. Our organization will initiate any kind of agitation programme opposing the Bill and will be staging protest programmes at any cost,” stated Lakhimpur district unit AJYP president Haren Baruah and general secretary Mobin Ahmed.

The organization warned Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma not to make ridiculous statements regarding the sensitive issue. Extending support to the protest programme, Lakhimpur unit TAYPA president Ajit Burhagohain, AKRSU general secretary Dipak Borah Koch, ST Students’ Union president Hemanta Bonia and AJYP adviser Uttam Borah became vocal against the issue. The activists of almost all regional units under the district committee of the organization took part in the protest programme.
