PATHSALA: Along with the rest of the country, the Indian Dental Association's Lower Assam branch also joined the joint protest of Indian Dental Association (IDA) and Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Tuesday against three moves by the Centre, which include the latest amendment by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) that allowed Ayurvedic postgraduate students to receive formal training to perform 66 types of medical procedures. Another issue is the National Education Policy 2020, which proposes to phase out all institutions offering single streams and that all universities and colleges must aim to become multidisciplinary by 2040. Third is the formation of four committees by the NITI Aayog to formulate policies on integrative medical education, practice, public health and research.
The protest was staged in Nalbari, Pathsala, Bongaigaon and other parts of Lower Assam. Speaking to media persons, Dr Rupam Choudhury, honorary secretary of IDA, Lower Assam branch, said that IDA opposed poaching of concepts and science from modern dentistry. "We have enough manpower to cater to the oral health need of our country," he said, adding that the slogan of 'one nation, one system' had been dubbed by many eminent personalities from the medical fraternity as 'mixopathy'.
