LAKHIMPUR: Lakhimpur Bar Association has strongly opposed the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, which is a tremendous threat to the existence of the Assamese language and the indigenous communities of the State. The members of the Association demonstrated a two-hour long sit-in at the Lakhimpur Bar Library premises as a mark of protest against the controversial Bill.
Attending in the programme which was organized as per the instruction of All Assam Lawyers’ Association, president of the Lakhimpur Bar Association, Dhebar Gohain Baruah became vocal against the Bill highlighting its negative impact. On the other hand, Arup Kalita, the ex-secretary of the Association, protested the sedition charge against noted intellectual of the State, Dr. Hiren Gohain, Manajit Mahanta and KMSS adviser Akhil Gogoi. He demanded the State Government to withdraw the FIR against them.
GOLAGHAT/sarupathar: The advocates of Golaghat Bar Association carried out a silent rally on Friday protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. The rally started from the Bar Association’s office through the Golaghat town. A protest meeting was held at Bar Association’s campus after the rally. Addressing the protest meeting the secretary of the Bar Association Durga Prasad Jaisowal said that the decision taken by the central government to implement Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 in Assam is a threat to the identity of indigenous people of Assam. At present Assamese people are in terror of losing their own identity. Later a memorandum was submitted to the Prime Minister of India through the Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat.
