Protest against 'harassment' by micro finance companies

PALASBARI: Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced the exemption of microfinance loan before the elections. Accordingly, after the BJP-led coalition government came to power after the elections, a number of rules and regulations regarding debt waiver were announced. There has been a backlash among women borrowers in the State after this.

As per the rules and regulations of the Reserve Bank of India, the chairman of microfinance waiver committee, Ashok Singhal announced the loan waiver rules. Many self-help groups in the rural areas are now facing uncertainty over the repayment of loans which were taken by poor families.

On Friday, hundreds of women staged massive protest at Sarpara village in Palasbari alleging harassment by microfinance companies with regard of recovering their loans from the women of the rural areas.
