DIBRUGARH: The protest by the Dibrugarh University Post Graduate Students' Union (DUPGSU) over the hiking of fees by the university authorities entered its eighth day on Tuesday. Members of the students' body have been on a strike since August 23 after Dibrugarh University issued a notification announcing a hike in the annual fees for its Arts, Science and Commerce streams.

Citing no change in the fees structure in the last 12 years, the university authorities had hiked the annual fees for Arts and Commerce stream from Rs 4,489 to Rs 5982 and Science stream from Rs 6,913 to Rs 9,194 for the academic session 2022-23. The announcement was met with strong protests by the Dibrugarh University Post Graduate Students' Union who demanded an immediate rollback of the decision.

"We are on protest since August 23 after the announcement of the fees hike by the Dibrugarh University authorities. Students of different colleges affiliated with Dibrugarh University are also on protest in their respective colleges in protest against the fee hike. The protest will continue until Dibrugarh University rollbacks its decision.

Dibrugarh University receives enough funds from the UGC and government to function smoothly. The government is talking about free education and Dibrugarh University is resorting to fee hike which is purely anti-student policy," DUPGSU president Bikash Misong said.

Meanwhile Dibrugarh University vice chancellor Jiten Hazarika has reiterated that the decision to hike fees was taken after due consultation with all stakeholders and there was no question of rollback of the decision.
